DISABLED PEOPLE THREATENED BY ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE
THE LAW
For immediate release - Monday 20th August 2001
ALERT is deeply opposed to any change
in the law which would single out the lives of sick or disabled
people as not worth the law's protection.
Deploring some of the publicity round an attempt by Brian and
Diane Pretty, who has motor neurone disease, to win a legal right
for him to kill her at her request. Andy Berry, who has
cerebral palsy, said today:
"I have watched as society has gained increased respect
for disabled people over the last 50 years of my life. I hope
I do not see the decline of this respect over the next few months."
