Press Release

20th February 2003 - For immediate release:

"Patient Assisted Dying" Bill - Safeguards "Deceptive"

Commenting on the announcement of the formal First Reading of the Patient Assisted Dying Bill in the House of Lords today (February 20th), Mr. Colin Harte, a carer of a person with a disability, said:

"Lord Joffe's Bill will increase the fears of those with terminal or serious incurable physical illnesses, who rightly see euthanasia as a sign that they are viewed as having lives worth less than others.

"The so-called 'strict safeguards' of the Bill are deceptive.  The Bill would in fact remove the safeguards against harm that the law already provides for vulnerable people."
