The words ''Living Will'' would appear to be a contradiction in terms, as Wills are normally associatedwith administering the estate of a person who has died. The law is particularly careful to ensure a Will is valid, i.e. that noundue pressure was brought to bear on the testator, and only then is probate granted and the deceased person's wishes carried out.Living Wills or Advance Directives, on the other hand, are designed to be implemented while a person is still alive but unable tocommunicate his/her wishes to the attending doctor, and no one is required to check whether the patient was fully informed of the consequences of signing.'' 'Campaigners make a ''declaration of life'' as Holland prepares to enact first euthanasia law.' 'MORE THAN 10,000 people in Holland have started carrying anti-euthanasia ''passports'' because they are frightened of being killed prematurely by over-enthusiastic doctors if they fall ill. The move comes - as the newly-elected Dutch government presses ahead with a proposal to legalise ''assisted suicide'' by doctors, the first of its kind in Europe.' The Sunday Telegraph 18 October 1998. Non-voluntary euthanasia is permitted in Holland.

'AGE Concern this week demanded a government inquiry into allegations of ''involuntary euthanasia'' after it was revealed that police are investigating 60 cases involving pensioners allegedly being starved to death in hospitals. The Daily Telegraph, which ran a series of articies on the scare, quoted one London doctor as saying: ''There are severe pressures on beds, and in order to relieve this there maybe a tendency to limit care inappropriately where you feel doubtful about the outcome.'' 'There is a commemorative bell in the town of Hadamar, Germany. It was erected to honor the memory of those who died in the basement gas chamber of the institution there and at 5 other institutions in Germany. It was in these institutions that Germany's first gas chambers were built beginning in September of 1939. In these places, as many as 200,000 people with disabilities were gassed to death in the ''Aktion T4'' program in pursuit of the so-called ''master race''. This method of killing people with disabilities continued until August 23, 1941 when Hitler ordered it discontinued because of a public outcry and a legal challenge (although secretly, many more people continued to be killed by lethal injection). This program demonstrated an efficient means of killing and marked the beginning of the Holocaust.' Council of Canadians with Disabilities: Publications: Latimer Watch 13 April 2001

''It takes a lot to be a person these days. According to some bioethicists, just being human does not cut it. Some of the greatest inhumanities in history have been committed against individuals who were considered non-persons by those in power. This alone proves that the difference between being a human and being a person is not just for philosophy classes.'' The Battalion 6 April 2005

'The Master of the Rolls, Lord Phillips, with Lord Justice Waller and Lord Justice Wall, in the Appeal Court on 28th July overturned the Judgment in favour of Leslie Burke which Mr. Justice Munby gave in 2004. Only ''competent'' patients who ask for it must receive food and fluid in hospital, if they need it to be given through a tube.' ALERT 29 July 2005

In July I participated in a debate about doctors' rights to prevent suicide.' As it turned out, the debate rapidly moved away from the rights and wrongs of preventing suicide to a consideration of the ethics of assisting people to kill themselves. And I came away feeling very disturbed, by what I had heard - Dr Rachel Perkins Openmind 117 Sept/Oct 2002

We are all deeply unpleasant. 'Church leaders were accused of orchestrating a ''very unpleasant campaign'' last night after the defeat of controversial attempts to legalise mercy killings. The claims by Labour peer Baroness Jay will outrage opponents of the latest attempt to let doctors help terminally-ill patients die. ' Daily Mail 13 May 2006
