Last year the Scottish Parliament passed the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Bill without any of the amendments which would have protected adults with incapacity from having their death brought about or hastened.

The Lord Chancellor has said he will introduce the English version, the Mental Incapacity Bill, when "Parliamentary time allows".

If the Bill came into force elderly people would be invited to give Continuing Powers of Attorney to someone to make healthcare decisions for them if they were to become incapable, even if this was only temporary. These could include withdrawal of assisted feeding and hydration, so as to cause their death. Someone who would inherit their money might be empowered to decide it was "in their best interest" for them to die.

The Bill also facilitates abortion and sterilisation of young incapacitated people who cannot give informed consent.
